Description
This is a work I did last summer for a book that will be published very soon. First, I drew a winged pony with my style, but client rejected it because it was clearly a "My Little Pony" and it was against reproduction rights.
So I did a different cute pony, thinking in a retro style, something between Tezuka and Sanrio's Deery Lou. But client again said that it was a My Little Pony 9_9
Finally, the drawing that will be published is a version of the cute angel without any pony around.
Do you think that the second one looks like a My Little Pony?
Do you think that, because there's a toy based on a horse with colored mane and body, it's not allowed to draw colored ponies any more? I mean, isn't people allowed to draw fashion blondes because there's Barbie, or robots because there's Transformers, or red-haired mermaids because there's Ariel? I don't think so. But it's very difficult to establish the differences between what is a copy and what is legal (mostly if there're lawyers of a great company between us).

Cool thing is, MLP is ONLY copyright line for line with their graphics art on the boxes. Anything else is permitted. It's very similar to poses, poses CANNOT be copyright unless the artwork is copied physically and reclaimed by a copy artist.
